Short description
When Sir Charles Baskerville is found dead in his country house, Dr James Mortimer asks Sherlock Holmes for help to save Sir Henry Baskerville, the only known heir, from the curse that haunts Baskerville family.
What's left behind the scenes
- The New Zealand Mint issued a series of silver two-dollar coins dedicated to the Sherlock Holmes stories, featuring stills from this film on the obverse.
- The film is based on the novella 'The Hound of the Baskervilles' (1902) by Arthur Conan Doyle.
- The characteristic dialogues between Sir Henry and Barrymore, which became the basis for numerous jokes, were improvised by Nikita Mikhalkov (Henry) and Alexander Adabashyan (Barrymore) during filming.
- The entire film was shot in Estonia, with the city scenes filmed in Tallinn.
- Upon their first meeting, Barrymore made a mistake by calling Doctor Watson Sir Baskerville, to which Watson replied: "Erare humanum est" — to err is human. Meanwhile, the snide Doctor Mortimer refers to Barrymore with the phrase: "sancta simplicitas" — "holy simplicity!" — an expression attributed to Jan Hus. Having been sentenced to be burned as a heretic by a Catholic church council, he reportedly uttered these words on the pyre...

- As in Maslennikov's two previous Sherlock Holmes films, Yuri Veksler was intended to be the cinematographer for 'The Hound of the Baskervilles,' but he suffered a heart attack. Consequently, two new cinematographers were urgently hired: Vladimir Ilyin was responsible for location shooting, while Dmitry Dolinin worked in the studio.
- In the ancient manuscript about the Hound of the Baskervilles, which Doctor Mortimer reads to Mr. Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson, there are spelling errors: 'im' instead of 'in', 'woho' instead of 'who', 'noth' instead of 'with', 'worid' instead of 'would', 'belive' instead of 'believe', 'Justiee' instead of 'Justice', 'Jearn' instead of 'Learn', 'his' instead of 'this', 'larnestly' instead of 'earnestly', 'comend' instead of 'commend', and 'war' instead of 'nor'. Additionally, several fragments of sentences are missing, rendering them meaningless.
- Alexander Adabashyan, who played Barrymore, wears a wedding ring on his right hand, as is customary in Russia (and in the USSR at the time). An English Barrymore, however, should wear his wedding ring on the left hand.
- In the film, Holmes finds a box of white phosphorus in the hut where the dog was kept. However, white phosphorus is a poisonous substance that, among other things, oxidizes rapidly (it is stored under water due to the risk of spontaneous combustion). A phosphorescent compound containing no phosphorus was used during filming.
- The eccentric Frankland surveys the surroundings of the Grimpen Mire using a telescope with a mirror-lens objective (which was only created in 1930). When Frankland invites Watson to the balcony where the telescope is installed, three ceramic insulators are visible on the house wall in the lower right corner of the screen—likely three-phase electrical wiring. On the left side of the balcony, a white wire also hangs along the wall, looking very much like a television antenna cable.
- When Watson is writing a report to Mr. Sherlock Holmes at Baskerville Hall, a close-up shows that the cufflinks on Doctor Watson's shirt sleeves are square, while in the wide shot, they are round. The envelope in the wide shot also looks different from the one in the close-up. Furthermore, Doctor Watson incorrectly formatted the delivery address, as 'real' English people write the house number first, followed by the street.
- When Sherlock Holmes, Doctor Watson, and Inspector Lestrade are traveling to the ambush site for the Hound of the Baskervilles, there is a lantern hanging in front of Lestrade. By the time they arrive, the lantern has disappeared. Furthermore, Holmes told Sir Henry to visit in a carriage, but then used that same carriage himself to meet the inspector. When Inspector Lestrade, Doctor Watson, and Sherlock Holmes rush out of the shed and chase after Stapleton, that very same shed unexpectedly appears in front of them.
