The Great Warrior Skanderbeg

Set in fifteenth-century Albania, this historical drama follows George Kastriot, an Albanian nobleman who becomes known as Skanderbeg. Taken from his homeland as a boy and raised at the Ottoman court, he grows into a celebrated military leader in the sultan's service. When news reaches him of the suffering endured by his own people under foreign rule, he turns against his former masters and takes up the struggle to free his country, a fight that will demand more than two decades and require him to overcome resistance among his own countrymen before he can face the Ottomans.

The film was directed by Sergei Yutkevich and written by Mikhail Papava, and was made as a co-production between Albania and the Soviet Union through Mosfilm and Albafilm Studio. Akaki Khorava plays Skanderbeg, heading a credited cast of thirty-five that includes Besa Imami, Adivie Alibali, Semyon Sokolovsky, Veriko Anjaparidze and Georgi Chernovolenko. The film runs 123 minutes and was released in late November 1953.

Audience responses have been modest but positive: on IMDb it holds a rating of 7.4 from 16 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.4 from 18 votes. The differing scores, drawn from small numbers of viewers, reflect how limited the film's circulation has been outside its countries of origin.
