Darryl Walker is an inventive but childlike man who has a talent for building gadgets from discarded junk. After a personal tragedy strikes, he turns a bulletproof garment into a homemade superhero suit and takes to the streets, aided by his more conventional brother Kevin, who works as a television cameraman. As the low-budget crime fighter Blankman, Darryl draws the attention of a television reporter and becomes entangled in a scheme involving the city's mayor.
The film is a 1994 American action comedy directed by Mike Binder, the first title in the directing credits listed for him, and written by J.F. Lawton and Damon Wayans. Wayans stars as Darryl, with David Alan Grier as Kevin, Robin Givens as reporter Kimberly Jonz, Christopher Lawford as Mayor Marvin Harris and Jason Alexander as Mr. Stone. Among the twenty credited cast members, Michael Wayans appears as the young Darryl. Columbia Pictures released the film, which runs 96 minutes and mixes action and adventure with comedy, crime and family elements.
Reception was modest. On IMDb the film holds a rating of 5 out of 10 from more than ten thousand votes, and on TMDB it sits at 5.4 out of 10 from a much smaller number of votes. A critics' rating of 3.8 out of 10, drawn from seventeen reviews, places professional opinion below the audience scores.
