Short description

Lauren King, a bookish American teenager, and Daniel Michon, a French boy her age whose passion is cinema, meet in Paris and fall in love. When Lauren's mother objects to the relationship, the pair set off for Venice, joined by Julius, an elderly Englishman they befriend whose stories give them the idea that a kiss beneath the Bridge of Sighs at sunset will bind a couple together forever.

George Roy Hill directed the film, which followed Slap Shot in his filmography and came before The World According to Garp. Allan Burns wrote the screenplay. Laurence Olivier plays Julius, with Diane Lane as Lauren and Thelonious Bernard as Daniel; Arthur Hill, Sally Kellerman and Broderick Crawford are also credited among a cast of 28. The production was a United States and France co-production.

Released in April 1979 and running 108 minutes, the film mixes comedy and romance. On TMDB it holds a rating of 6.9 out of 10 from 88 votes, indicating a modest but favorable response from that audience.

What's left behind the scenes

  • During the filming of this movie, Sir Laurence Olivier (1907-1989) was 71 years old and in poor health, but the actor insisted on performing all the stunts himself. Director George Roy Hill (1921-2002) ordered a special motorized bicycle to be constructed for Olivier. The scenes were to be shot from an angle so that the viewer would not see this. While the director was away, the actor climbed onto a regular bicycle and rode it on his own.
  • The film crew was denied permission to film in the Louvre, so a model of it was built.
  • Thelonious Bernard spoke almost no English and had never acted in a movie before. A month before filming began, he moved into the home of director George Roy Hill, where he took a crash course in English and acting.
