In a vast underground village where humanity has taken refuge, a young digger named Simon spends his days expanding the tunnels that make up his people's small world. His life changes when he unearths a small drill and a miniature robot, and a giant creature breaks in from the surface. Together with Kamina, the forceful leader of a small brigade, and Yoko, a sharpshooter from above ground, Simon joins the fight against the beastmen who rule the surface.
This is a theatrical retelling of the first part of the Gurren Lagann anime series, combining episodes into a single feature with some newly animated sequences and a new theme song. It was released in Japan in September 2008 and runs 112 minutes. The film is directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi, his first feature after the series, and precedes the second compilation film, Gurren Lagann the Movie: The Lights in the Sky Are Stars. The screenplay is by Kazuki Nakashima, Hiroshi Yamaguchi and Masahiko Otsuka, with Yosuke Toba producing. The voice cast includes Tetsuya Kakihara as Simon, Marina Inoue as Yoko, Yukari Fukui as Nia, Mitsuki Saiga as Rossiu and Masaya Onosaka as Leeron.
The film holds a rating of 7.6 out of 10 on IMDb from around 2,200 votes, and the same score on TMDB from roughly 122 votes. These figures indicate a generally positive reception from viewers, with the audience scores holding steady across both platforms.
