All the cottages in the commune were built specifically for filming.
The film was shot in chronological order.
The film is based on the real-life tragedy associated with the mass suicide of 913 people in "Jonestown," an ideological community of the "People's Temple" religious organization in Guyana in 1978.
A commentary on the film states that in the original version of the ending, the helicopter pilot did not die from a bullet. The helicopter successfully gained altitude, after which the pilot said: "One must obey the Father's commands" – and crashed the aircraft in a dive, resulting in the death of everyone upon impact with the ground.
