Lakshya centres on Karan Shergill, the younger son of a wealthy family who drifts through life with no direction, spending his time on parties and women while his older brother works in the family business. After watching war films, Karan impulsively enlists in the army, but the discipline proves too much and he soon walks away. The disappointment of those around him, including his girlfriend Romi, pushes him to return and complete his officer training. Years later, during the Kashmir conflict, he encounters Romi again, now working as a journalist and engaged to a businessman. The film follows Karan from aimlessness to commitment, both as a soldier and in his personal life.
Farhan Akhtar directed, with a screenplay by Javed Akhtar; Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani produced through Excel Entertainment and UTV Motion Pictures. It was Akhtar's second film as director, arriving between Dil Chahta Hai and Don in his filmography. Hrithik Roshan plays Karan, Preity Zinta plays Romi, and Amitabh Bachchan, Om Puri, Boman Irani and Sushant Singh appear in supporting roles. On IMDb it holds 7.8/10 from around 28,000 votes, a strong audience score, while the critics' rating stands lower at 6.4/10 from 173 reviews. On TMDB it has 6.7/10 from 127 votes.
