What If

Wallace, who dropped out of medical school, has been through one failed relationship after another and decides to give up on romance. At a party he meets Chantry, an animator with a long-term boyfriend named Ben, and the two connect immediately. Since Chantry is already in a relationship, they agree to keep things platonic, even as they spend more time together, exchange messages constantly and share meals. The attraction between them remains obvious to those around them, including Wallace's roommate Allan and Chantry's boyfriend, leaving both to weigh their feelings against the friendship they have built.

Michael Dowse directed the film, his fifth feature after It's All Gone Pete Tong, Fubar II, Take Me Home Tonight and Goon. Elan Mastai wrote the screenplay, and the cast is led by Daniel Radcliffe as Wallace and Zoe Kazan as Chantry, with Rafe Spall as Ben, Adam Driver as Allan, Megan Park and Mackenzie Davis. It is a co-production between Ireland, Canada and the United States.

Made for about 11 million dollars, the film took in roughly 9 million worldwide after its September 2013 release. On IMDb it holds 6.8 out of 10 from around 84,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.7 from about 2,100 votes. A critics' rating of 6.3 from 131 reviews places it close to the audience scores, suggesting a modest but generally favourable reception.
