Set in Lapland centuries ago, the story follows an orphaned boy named Nikolas. To ensure he is cared for, the local villagers agree to raise him collectively, with Nikolas moving to a different home every Christmas. To express his gratitude, he creates handmade toys as farewell gifts for the children in each household. When he reaches thirteen, Nikolas is sent to work for Iisakki, a grumpy carpenter who initially forbids him from making presents. After earning the man's trust, Nikolas continues his tradition, though the practice faces new threats when Iisakki must eventually leave.
Directed and produced by Juha Wuolijoki, this was the first of two films he directed, followed by Vinski 2. The screenplay was written by Marko Leino. The cast features Hannu-Pekka Björkman, Otto Gustavsson, and Jonas Rinne in different stages of Nikolas's life, alongside Kari Väänänen as Iisakki, Minna Haapkylä as Kristiina, and Mikko Leppilampi as Hannus.
Produced by Snapper Films with a budget of 3 million USD, the movie earned 4 million USD at the worldwide box office. It was a commercial success in Finland. Audiences responded positively to the film, which holds a rating of 7.1 on IMDb based on 5,300 votes and a 7.2 on TMDB from 141 votes.
