Cover Girl
Short description
Cover Girl centres on Rusty Parker, a dancer at a small Brooklyn nightclub. The club's owner and choreographer, Danny McGuire, is also her boyfriend, and while he believes she could become a star, he disapproves when she enters a contest to appear on a magazine cover. Rusty wins the competition and is offered a career as a model, which puts her relationship with Danny under strain. The film follows her as she weighs the pull of professional success against the life and the man she already has, with Danny eventually realizing what he stands to lose.
The film was released in 1944 and runs 107 minutes. Charles Vidor directed it, working from a screenplay by Virginia Van Upp, with Arthur Schwartz producing for Columbia Pictures. It sits between Vidor's The Desperadoes and Gilda in his filmography. Rita Hayworth plays Rusty as well as Maribelle Hicks in a flashback, Gene Kelly plays Danny, and Lee Bowman appears as Noel Wheaton. Phil Silvers, Jinx Falkenburg and Leslie Brooks are also among the credited cast of 37.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.7 from around 6,400 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.4 from about 99 votes. A critics' rating of 7.1 from 18 reviews places it above both audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Columbia Pictures gave Gene Kelly almost complete control over the making of this film, and many of his ideas contributed to its lasting success. He also used a photography trick so that he could dance with his own reflection in one sequence, achieving a ghostly quality for his double through the use of superimposition.
- Rita Hayworth's singing voice was provided by Martha Mears.
- According to Columbia Pictures, the film was the first color film for the studio because studio head Harry Cohn wanted to demonstrate its beauty and richness, and in particular, Rita Hayworth's red hair.
- The dance scene with Gene Kelly and his reflection, which took only a few minutes of screen time, was rehearsed for a month by Kelly and the film's cinematographer.
