What's left behind the scenes

  • Columbia Pictures gave Gene Kelly almost complete control over the making of this film, and many of his ideas contributed to its lasting success. He also used a photography trick so that he could dance with his own reflection in one sequence, achieving a ghostly quality for his double through the use of superimposition.
  • Rita Hayworth's singing voice was provided by Martha Mears.
  • According to Columbia Pictures, the film was the first color film for the studio because studio head Harry Cohn wanted to demonstrate its beauty and richness, and in particular, Rita Hayworth's red hair.
  • The dance scene with Gene Kelly and his reflection, which took only a few minutes of screen time, was rehearsed for a month by Kelly and the film's cinematographer.
