Short description
Jeff and Amy Taylor are driving from Massachusetts to California to start a new life when their jeep stalls on a remote desert highway. A truck driver offers to take Amy to a nearby cafe so she can call for help while Jeff stays with the vehicle. After Jeff gets the car running and reaches the cafe, Amy is nowhere to be found, and the people he questions claim never to have seen her. His search for answers soon turns into a struggle against a conspiracy that has swallowed his wife.
Jonathan Mostow directed and co-wrote the film with Sam Montgomery, and it was his first feature as director. Kurt Russell plays Jeff, with Kathleen Quinlan as Amy and J.T. Walsh as the trucker Warren Barr, alongside M.C. Gainey, Jack Noseworthy and Rex Linn. Dino and Martha De Laurentiis produced. The film was made for about 36 million dollars and took in roughly 50 million worldwide.
On IMDb it holds a 7 out of 10 from around 69,000 votes, while on TMDB it has a 6.9 from over a thousand ratings, and a critics' rating of 7.3 from 58 reviews places it slightly above the audience scores. Mostow went on to direct U-571, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, Surrogates and The Hunter's Prayer.
What's left behind the scenes
- Kurt Russell was flown to and from the set by helicopter every day so he could spend the night with his family in Los Angeles.
- The map seen by the audience at the beginning of the film depicts the state of New Mexico. However, all the names have been changed, and none of the towns mentioned in the film actually exist in the United States.
- The idea for the film came to Mostoy during a trip to Las Vegas with his wife.
- Composer Basil Poledouris had to write the music for the film twice because the first version was rejected.
