The Fallen Idol

Philippe is the young son of a French ambassador living in London. With his parents often absent, he is left largely in the care of Baines, the embassy's butler, and Baines's wife. Philippe adores Baines and treats him almost as a father figure, but the boy's admiration is tested when he learns of a secret the butler has been keeping.

Carol Reed directed and produced the film, working from a screenplay by Graham Greene. It sits between his 1941 Letter from Home and his 1949 The Third Man in a directing career that also includes Night Train to Munich, Trapeze, The Agony and the Ecstasy and Oliver!. The cast is led by Ralph Richardson as Baines, with Michèle Morgan as Julie, Sonia Dresdel as Mrs. Baines and Bobby Henrey as Philippe, alongside Denis O'Dea and Jack Hawkins as police officers.
