Short description

A journalist named Grace Collier sees what looks like a murder through her apartment window: a fashion model, Danielle Breton, stabbing a man. Grace calls the police, but when they search the apartment they find nothing to support her story, and no one believes her. Determined to prove what she saw, Grace hires a private investigator, Joseph Larch, and their inquiry turns up details about Danielle's past, including a twin sister, Dominique, with whom she was once conjoined. Danielle is calm and affectionate, while Dominique is unstable and prone to violent moods, and the two are difficult to tell apart.

Brian De Palma directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Louisa Rose, and Edward R. Pressman produced. The film is the third of the twenty-four features De Palma has directed, following Hi, Mom! and preceding Phantom of the Paradise. Margot Kidder plays both sisters, with Jennifer Salt as Grace, Charles Durning as Larch, William Finley as Emil Breton, Lisle Wilson as Phillip Woode and Barnard Hughes as Arthur McLennen.

The film runs 93 minutes and was released in March 1973. It took about 1 million dollars worldwide, a modest return. Audiences rate it at 6.8 out of 10 on IMDb and 6.7 out of 10 on TMDB, while critics give it 7.4 out of 10, a warmer response than either audience score.

What's left behind the scenes

  • A significant portion of the film was shot on 35mm film, while the dream sequences were filmed with a 16mm camera to give the image a "grainy" quality.
  • When the inscription is made on the cake for Danielle in the store, it is done in block letters. But when the cake is presented to the heroine, the letters are already cursive.
  • Director and screenwriter Brian De Palma was inspired by an article about the Soviet Krivoshlyapov sisters.
  • Rehearsals took a month, and filming itself lasted 8 weeks.
