Short description

Random Harvest is a romance drama set in England around the end of the First World War. A British officer, Charles Rainier, has lost his memory after being wounded in combat and is confined to an institution. When the armistice celebrations begin, he slips away and, drifting without any idea of who he is, meets a music hall performer, Paula. She takes him in and the two build a quiet life together in a Devon village, where he works as a writer. A road accident in Liverpool, however, restores his earlier memories and erases everything that happened since his escape, separating him from the woman he married. Paula finds a way back into his life under an assumed identity while he remains unaware of their shared past.

Mervyn LeRoy directed the film, the seventh of the fourteen features credited to him in chronological order, following Waterloo Bridge and preceding Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo. Claudine West, George Froeschel and Arthur Wimperis wrote the screenplay, and Sidney Franklin produced it for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Ronald Colman and Greer Garson lead a cast of twenty-seven credited players, among them Philip Dorn, Susan Peters, Henry Travers and Reginald Owen. Made for about one million dollars, it returned roughly ten million worldwide. It holds a 7.9 rating on IMDb from some 9,200 votes and a 7.3 on TMDB from a much smaller sample, while a critics' rating of 7.8 from eleven reviews sits close to the audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Greer Garson (1904-1996) spent most of her time on set with her favorite cameraman, Joseph Ruttenberg (1889-1983). She particularly liked how he "played" with the light and understood that she looked best when filmed from the right side. Moreover, even the sets were often constructed to film her in a way that her asymmetrical facial features would be invisible to the audience.
  • Ronald Colman (1891-1958), as part of the British Army, fought in World War I and participated in the Battle of Ypres in 1914, where he received serious shrapnel wounds. He was awarded for bravery and discharged from the army six months later.
