Short description
Radioland Murders is set in Chicago in 1939, on the night a new radio network, WBN, is about to begin broadcasting across the country. The launch quickly descends into chaos when a mysterious voice cuts into the transmission and members of the station's staff begin turning up dead. Roger Henderson, one of the network's writers, falls under suspicion and has to work out who is behind the killings while the evening's programmes roll on regardless. A police lieutenant named Cross leads the official investigation into the crimes, which threaten the network's very existence.
The film was directed by Mel Smith, the first of three features he made, followed by Bean and Blackball. Willard Huyck, Ron Osborn and Jeff Reno wrote the screenplay, and Fred Roos and Rick McCallum produced for Universal Pictures and Lucasfilm Ltd. Brian Benben and Mary Stuart Masterson play Roger and his wife Penny, with Ned Beatty, Scott Michael Campbell, Brion James and Michael Lerner among a credited cast of 103.
Released in October 1994, the film had a budget of about 15 million dollars and took roughly one million dollars worldwide, a large shortfall. On IMDb it holds 6.2 out of 10 from around 4,200 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.8 from a much smaller number of votes. A critics' rating of 5.4 from 18 reviews places it below its IMDb audience score but close to the TMDB figure.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film is dedicated to the memory of Anita Morris (1943-1994), who passed away from ovarian cancer shortly after filming concluded.
- Willard Huyck and Gloria Katz (1942-2018) wrote the original screenplay back in 1974. It contained numerous references to stars of past radio shows, starting with the era of the 1930s. The management of Universal Pictures demanded that the script be rewritten and all references removed that the public during the filming period might not recognize. Producer George Lucas later greatly regretted that the demand had been met.
- The film's budget was quite modest, but set designer Gavin Bocquet still managed to create 20 rooms in a honeycomb-like structure. The rest (such as the appearance of the building or the high-voltage power line support on the roof) was added using digital technology under the direction of visual effects specialist Scott Squires.
- According to producer Rick McCallum, the film was shot during a break in filming of the series "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles" (1992-1993), and used a significant portion of the series' cast. The crew was preparing to depart for Thailand when an earthquake struck California, and all roads from the filming location were blocked for approximately a week. The crew and cast had plenty of food, as they were expecting the arrival of 400 extras (who, for obvious reasons, did not arrive, but the crew managed to shoot some scenes without them). This meant that everyone had to take insurance break before leaving for Thailand, and George Lucas suggested using the free time to film "Radioland Murders" (1994).
