Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland
Short description
A young boy named Nemo is transported to a magical realm of dreams after being invited by King Morpheus. In this fantasy world, Nemo is welcomed by the inhabitants and the king's daughter, Princess Camille, and is chosen to be the royal heir. However, his adventures take a dangerous turn when he accidentally triggers a conflict that threatens to destroy the dream world and the waking world.
Directed by Masanori Hata, Masami Hata, and William T. Hurtz, this 1989 joint production between the United States and Japan features a screenplay by Chris Columbus, Ray Bradbury, and Richard Outten. It is the second film directed by Masanori Hata and the fourth in the career of Masami Hata, who later directed two more films in 1991 and 1997. The voice cast includes Gabriel Damon and Takuma Gono as Nemo, along with Mickey Rooney, Chikao Ohtsuka, and René Auberjonois.
The film is generally well-received by viewers, holding a 7.1 rating on IMDb from 8,800 votes and a 6.9 rating on TMDB from 185 votes. These audience scores are higher than the 5.8 rating provided by film critics based on 29 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- In the early stages of production, Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki were working on the project, but both left due to creative differences. Miyazaki later said that working on "Little Nemo" was "the worst experience in his professional career".
- The first Japanese anime released for wide public distribution in the United States.
- The creator of Little Nemo, Winsor McCay, being one of the pioneers of American animation, realized the first adaptation of his comics in 1911. It was a 10-minute film, in the creation of which McCay was assisted by director and producer James Blackton, with 2 minutes of the film consisting of animated material.
- Despite generally favorable reviews, the film was a box office failure: it grossed around $10 million in Japan and just over a million dollars in the US (with a total production budget of $30 million). Nevertheless, after its release on VHS, over 2 million copies were sold.
