Momo is a young girl who has made her home in the ruins of an old amphitheater on the edge of a town. She has a rare gift: by listening to people, she helps them solve their problems, settle quarrels and come up with games, and the neighborhood's children and adults alike seek her out. Her friends include Gigi, a storyteller, and Beppo, a street sweeper.
That life is disrupted by the appearance of grey-suited men who persuade the townspeople to save time. Soon everyone is working obsessively and has no time left for friends or leisure, and only Momo sees through the scheme. When her friends stop listening to her, she sets out to find Master Hora, the guardian of time, hoping for help, while the time thieves follow her.
The film is based on Michael Ende's novel and was directed by Johannes Schaaf, whose only earlier feature was Im Schatten einer Großstadt in 1965. Radost Bokel plays Momo, with Mario Adorf, Armin Mueller-Stahl, Leopoldo Trieste, Ninetto Davoli and Bruno Stori in supporting roles. It is a German-Italian production. On IMDb it holds a 6.5 rating from around 2,300 votes, while on TMDB it scores 7 from a much smaller base of 79 votes.
