Charles is a seasoned criminal released from prison, and he has no interest in the quiet, respectable life his wife proposes. Instead, he plans one last job: robbing the vault of a casino in Cannes. To pull it off, he recruits Francis, a younger man he met behind bars, along with a small crew, including a driver played by Maurice Biraud. The scheme is worked out in detail, though the getaway proves harder than the break-in itself.
Henri Verneuil directed the film, which was released in March 1963 and runs 122 minutes. It followed A Monkey in Winter in his filmography and sits between that 1962 title and Weekend at Dunkirk the following year. The screenplay is by Michel Audiard, with Jacques Bar and Jacques Juranville producing. Jean Gabin plays Charles opposite Alain Delon as Francis, and Claude Cerval, Viviane Romance and Henri Virlogeux are among the credited cast of 43.
The film holds a rating of 7.2 out of 10 on TMDB, based on 219 votes, which suggests a generally favorable response from those who have logged it. Produced in France and Italy, it is a crime drama built around the generational pairing of its two leads.
