The Sword of Doom

Set in Japan during the 1860s, as the shogunate is collapsing and the samurai class faces an uncertain future, The Sword of Doom follows Ryunosuke Tsukue, a swordsman of extraordinary skill and almost no conscience. He kills casually, driven by a fascination with his own blade rather than any cause, and his reputation spreads through a province already divided between loyalists and rebels. When he agrees to take part in an exhibition match at his old fencing school, the wife of his opponent begs him to lose on purpose and offers herself in return; he accepts, then kills the man anyway. The dead man's brother begins to hunt him, while Ryunosuke drifts toward a band of assassins and a confrontation with Toranosuke Shimada, a warrior whose discipline matches his own talent.

Kihachi Okamoto directed, working from a screenplay by Shinobu Hashimoto, and Tatsuya Nakadai plays the lead, with Yūzō Kayama, Michiyo Aratama and Toshirō Mifune heading a credited cast of twenty-eight. The film was released in February 1966, running 122 minutes, and its two Okamoto titles on record place it before Zatoichi Meets Yojimbo. Ratings are strong and consistent: on IMDb it holds 7.9/10 from around 13,000 votes, on TMDB 7.7/10 from roughly 270, while a critics' rating of 7/10 from ten reviews sits close to the audience scores, suggesting broad agreement rather than a sharp divide.
