The Trip follows Paul Groves, a television commercial director whose marriage is falling apart. When his wife leaves him, he turns to his friend John, who suggests taking LSD as a way to understand himself better. John agrees to stay with him during the experience and keep him calm, and the two settle into a house overlooking Los Angeles while Paul takes the drug. What begins as a peaceful mood with intense colors and sunlight gradually turns into a troubling inner journey, and afterward Paul's lover tries to temper his new enthusiasm.
Roger Corman directed the film, the seventeenth of the nineteen features he made in chronological order, arriving between The Tomb of Ligeia and A Time for Killing. Jack Nicholson wrote the screenplay, and Corman also produced it for American International Pictures. Peter Fonda plays Paul, with Susan Strasberg as his wife Sally, Bruce Dern as John, and Dennis Hopper, Salli Sachse and Barboura Morris among the credited cast of twenty-seven. Made during the late 1960s when LSD was a subject of public fascination, the film runs eighty-five minutes.
Audience response has been modest: on TMDB it holds a rating of 5.8 out of 10 from 115 votes, while on IMDb it stands at 4.9 out of 10 from 23 reviews, so viewers have tended to receive it with some reservation.
