A married woman from a rural village arrives in Moscow for the first time, carrying homemade ham to sell. On that same day she meets a taxi driver, a reserved man older than she is, and the two end up spending hours together driving through the city. Their mutual liking grows over the course of this single encounter. What follows is a brief, quiet connection between two people whose ordinary lives take on a different light. Tatyana Doronina plays the woman, Nyura, and Oleg Efremov plays the driver, Sasha, with Vyacheslav Shalevich, Alevtina Rumyantseva, Nikolai Smirnov and Valentina Telegina in supporting roles.
The film was directed by Tatyana Lioznova from a screenplay by Aleksandr Borshchagovskiy, produced by B. Kiselev at Gorky Film Studios, and released in April 1968. It runs 79 minutes. Lioznova had already made several features before this one, and it became one of the well-regarded titles in her filmography. The story is based on a short story by Aleksandr Borshchagovskiy.
On IMDb, the film holds a rating of 7.8 from roughly 1,400 votes. On TMDB it has a rating of 7.2 from about 41 votes. Both figures point to a settled reputation rather than a widely revisited title, with the IMDb sample much larger than the TMDB one.
