What's left behind the scenes

  • A free adaptation of the novel “Professor Unrat, or the End of a Tyrant” (1905) by German writer and public figure Heinrich Mann (1871-1950).
  • Kete Haak (1897-1986) was initially cast in the role of Lola-Lola, but was replaced by Marlene Dietrich (1901-1992) just before filming began.
  • The English-dubbed version of the film was considered lost for many years, until a copy was discovered in German archives. It was restored and shown at the Berlin and Beyond film festival in San Francisco on January 19, 2009.
