The Big Bird Cage is a women-in-prison action film set in a remote jungle camp where incarcerated women are forced into brutal labor, feeding sugar cane into a large mechanical press under the watch of cruel guards. Terry, a young woman who becomes entangled with a pair of revolutionary mercenaries, is captured and sent to the camp, where she must learn how its inmates survive. She joins forces with the mercenaries and the prisoners to plan an escape and turn the tables on their captors.
Jack Hill wrote and directed the film, which followed his earlier The Big Doll House and came before Coffy and Foxy Brown in his filmography. Pam Grier stars as Blossom, with Anitra Ford as Terry, Sid Haig as Django, Candice Roman, Teda Bracci and Carol Speed rounding out the cast. Jane Schaffer and Cirio H. Santiago produced the American-Filipino co-production for New World Pictures.
On IMDb, the film holds a rating of 5.8 from roughly 3,400 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.6 from a much smaller pool of 87 votes. The two scores are close, suggesting a modest but consistent level of appreciation among viewers who seek out this era of exploitation cinema.
