Married to the Mob
Short description
Angela de Marco is married to Frank, a small-time gangster on Long Island, and she has grown tired of the money and the criminal world that surrounds her. When Frank is killed by his boss, Tony Russo, after an affair with Tony's mistress, Angela takes her son and moves to New York City to start over. Her attempt to leave that life behind proves difficult: Tony begins pursuing her, two FBI agents mistake her for his new girlfriend, and one of them, Mike Downey, keeps her under surveillance while growing personally involved with her. Tony's wife Connie also takes an interest in Angela, suspicious about what her husband is doing.
Jonathan Demme directed the film from a screenplay by Barry Strugatz and Mark R. Burns. It was Demme's seventh feature as director, following Something Wild and preceding The Silence of the Lambs. Michelle Pfeiffer plays Angela, with Alec Baldwin as Frank, Dean Stockwell as Tony, Matthew Modine as Mike Downey and Mercedes Ruehl as Connie. The production had a budget of $10 million and returned about $21 million worldwide, a modest result.
On IMDb, the film holds a rating of 6.2 from over nineteen thousand votes, and on TMDB it sits at 6 out of 10 from a much smaller number of votes. A critics' rating of 7.3 from forty-nine reviews places it noticeably above those audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- When Tony's wife is flying to Miami to meet her husband, a microphone is visible at the bottom of the screen as she retrieves a jacket from the overhead compartment.
- The size of the flower bouquet is inconsistent across different shots.
- The filmmakers revised the screenplay six times in hopes of convincing Tom Cruise to join the cast. Instead, Cruise chose to film with Roger Donaldson in the romantic comedy "Cocktail" (1988).
- According to Matthew Modine, he was depressed during the filming of this movie, as it reminded him too much of filming Stanley Kubrick's (1928-1998) war drama 'Full Metal Jacket' (1987).
- The camera and a crew member are visible in the reflection in the window when agents Downey and Benitez are following Angela.
- At one point, it can be seen that Angela is warming her legs under her dress. This is not noticeable during a long take of the same scene.
- Mark R. Burns decided as early as age ten that he would one day write a screenplay about the mafia. His home on Long Island was later attacked, and it was then discovered that his own father was involved in organized crime structures.
- So much material was left out of the film that director Jonathan Demme (1944-2017) inserted it at the very end of the film, into the credits.
