Over the Edge follows a group of teenagers in New Granada, a planned community set in the American Southwest where everything has been designed for adult comfort and nothing for the young people who live there. Bored and with nowhere to go, Carl, Cory, Richie, Mark and their friends drift into drug use, vandalism and escalating clashes with the local police. What begins as restless mischief hardens into open rebellion against the town's authorities.
The film was directed by Jonathan Kaplan, its seventh feature, arriving between Truck Turner and Project X in a run that later included The Accused and Brokedown Palace. Charles S. Haas and Tim Hunter wrote the screenplay, and George Litto produced. Michael Eric Kramer plays Carl, with Pamela Ludwig as Cory, Matt Dillon as Richie and Vincent Spano as Mark heading a credited cast of 39. Made for about 3 million dollars, it was released in May 1979 and runs 95 minutes.
On IMDb it holds a 7.3 rating from 13 reviews, while on TMDB it sits at 7.1 from 145 votes, a small but consistent sign of regard for a low-budget crime drama that has reached viewers well beyond its original release.
