From the Hip follows Robin "Stormy" Weathers, a young lawyer at a Boston firm who turns a routine civil case into a public spectacle that earns him headlines and a promotion. The attention changes how he sees his own methods, and he is soon handed a much harder assignment: defending a college professor who appears to be guilty of murder.
The film was directed by Bob Clark, who also wrote the screenplay with David E. Kelley and produced it with René Dupont. It sits between Rhinestone and Loose Cannons in a run of films that also includes Black Christmas, Murder by Decree, Porky's, A Christmas Story and Porky's II: The Next Day. Judd Nelson plays Weathers, with Elizabeth Perkins as Jo Ann, John Hurt as Douglas Benoit, Darren McGavin as Craig Duncan, Dan Monahan as Larry and David Alan Grier as Steve Hadley, among 34 credited cast members.
Released in February 1987, the American production had a budget of 9 million dollars and took about 10 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.1 out of 10 from roughly 2,800 votes, while on TMDB it has 5.9 out of 10 from 47 votes, so the audience scores from the two sources are close.
