Short description
Hannah and Her Sisters follows three New York sisters across roughly two years, framed by a pair of Thanksgiving gatherings. Hannah, a successful actress, holds her family together while her sisters struggle: Lee drifts through an affair with an older artist, and Holly searches for a direction, repeatedly changing her plans. The arrangement fractures when Hannah's husband Elliot becomes drawn to Lee. Meanwhile Mickey, Hannah's ex-husband and a television producer preoccupied with his health, begins seeing Holly. The sisters and the men around them gather again at Thanksgiving, where long-building tensions surface.
Woody Allen wrote and directed the film, the thirteenth of the forty-eight features he has directed; it followed The Purple Rose of Cairo and preceded Radio Days. Robert Greenhut produced it for Orion Pictures. Mia Farrow plays Hannah, with Barbara Hershey as Lee and Dianne Wiest as Holly, while Allen appears as Mickey and Michael Caine as Elliot. Lloyd Nolan plays Evan among a credited cast of fifty-three, supported by a credited crew of fifty.
Made for about six million dollars, the film took roughly forty million worldwide, a strong return on its budget. On IMDb it holds 7.8 from around eighty-one thousand votes, and on TMDB 7.5 from about twelve hundred. A critics' rating of 8.6 from fifty-nine reviews places professional assessment noticeably above the audience scores.

- The apartment that belongs to Hanna in the film was, at the time, the apartment of Mia Farrow.
- Originally, Woody Allen wanted to make the film's ending more bleak, but the producers persuaded him to rework it into a slightly more optimistic one.
- Some scenes were filmed in the home of Mia Farrow, who played the role of Hannah, and during filming, the actress and her children simply went about their daily routines. This was not easy for either the actress and her family, or the film crew. According to Michael Caine (who played Elliot), it repeatedly happened that when Farrow was feeding her children, she was told that she needed to perform in a particular scene, she would postpone it and go to the next room, where the filming equipment was already set up, and filming would begin.
- Woody Allen confessed in an interview that the idea to write the film's screenplay came to him after rereading Leo Tolstoy's novel 'Anna Karenina'.
- Woody Allen 'placed' almost all of his household members in roles in the film. Mia Farrow, who played Hanna, was his wife at the time. Maureen O'Sullivan, who played Hanna’s mother, is actually Mia Farrow’s mother. Allen also cast two of Mia Farrow’s biological children and two adopted children in the film.
