Set in the Australian mountains around the turn of the twentieth century, The Man from Snowy River follows eighteen-year-old Jim Craig, who has spent his whole life on his father's farm. When his father dies, Jim must go down to the lowlands to earn the money needed to keep the property going. There he takes work with the wealthy, hard-nosed landowner Harrison, and falls for Harrison's daughter Jessica, a situation that grows complicated as a long-running feud over land between Harrison and his twin brother Spur draws Jim in.
George T. Miller directed the film from a screenplay by John Dixon, with Geoff Burrowes producing. It was the first feature Miller directed, followed in later years by The Aviator, The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter and Andre, among others. Kirk Douglas plays the twin brothers Harrison and Spur, while Tom Burlinson and Sigrid Thornton lead the cast as Jim and Jessica, with Terence Donovan, Jack Thompson and Tommy Dysart in supporting roles.
Made for about four million dollars, the film took roughly twenty-one million worldwide, a strong return on its production cost. On IMDb it holds a 7.2 rating from around eleven thousand votes, and on TMDB a 7 from about 169 votes. A critics' rating of 6.3 from thirteen reviews places it somewhat below the audience scores.
