Short description

Megan is 28 and drifting. She has a degree but no career, lives with her high-school boyfriend Anthony, and watches as her friends move through the milestones she keeps postponing. When Anthony proposes, she panics rather than celebrates. Claiming a week away, she instead stays with Annika, a 16-year-old she has recently befriended, and Annika's father Craig, a single man worn down by responsibility. The arrangement forces Megan to confront the gap between the life she is expected to want and the one she has chosen.

Laggies was directed by Lynn Shelton and written by Andrea Seigel, following Shelton's 2011 film Your Sister's Sister. Keira Knightley plays Megan, with Chloë Grace Moretz as Annika, Sam Rockwell as Craig, and supporting turns from Kaitlyn Dever, Ellie Kemper and Mark Webber among the 29 credited cast.

Released in 2014, the film was made for about five million dollars and returned roughly two million at the worldwide box office. Audience response has been moderate: it holds a 6.4 rating on IMDb from around 47,000 votes, and a 6.1 on TMDB from roughly 1,200 votes. A critics' rating of 6 out of 10 across 114 reviews puts professional assessment close to the audience figures, with neither group treating it as a standout.

What's left behind the scenes

  • A California desert tortoise named Shelly was a middle school class pet in Seattle during filming.
  • When Megan is on a Skype call with Anthony, the date displayed on the laptop panel first shows the 16th, then the 11th. These numbers, 16 and 11, switch several times.
  • Anne Hathaway was considered for the lead role in this film, but she left the project due to commitments to "Song One" (2014) and "Interstellar" (2014). The role ultimately went to Keira Knightley.
  • Rebecca Hall turned down the lead role in this film, opting instead for "Transcendence" (2014).
