The Black Shield of Falworth

Set in England during the reign of King Henry IV, The Black Shield of Falworth follows Myles Falworth and his sister Meg, who grow up as peasants unaware of their true parentage. A keepsake left by their father, a ring bearing a black shield, hints at a noble lineage, and the two set out for Mackworth Castle to uncover the secret of their birth. There Myles trains toward knighthood, forms friendships and rivalries, and falls for Lady Anne of Mackworth, while the scheming Earl of Alban stands in his way at court.

Rudolph Maté directed the film, which sits between Second Chance (1953) and Three Violent People (1956) in his filmography. Oscar Brodney wrote the screenplay, and Melville Tucker and Robert Arthur produced it for Universal International Pictures. Tony Curtis plays Myles, Janet Leigh plays Lady Anne, David Farrar plays the Earl of Alban, Barbara Rush plays Meg, Herbert Marshall plays the Earl of Mackworth, and Torin Thatcher appears as Sir James among the 33 credited cast members.

Released in September 1954, the film runs 99 minutes and mixes adventure, history and romance. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.4 from around 2,300 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.2 from a much smaller base of 31 votes, a modest reception from audiences across both.
