Short description

In 1807, during the Napoleonic Wars, a British naval captain named Horatio Hornblower commands the frigate HMS Lydia on a secret mission across the Atlantic. His orders are to support a rebel leader in Central America who has turned against Spanish rule, Spain being allied with France at the time. England and Spain, however, conclude a peace while Hornblower is at sea, and the mission loses its purpose. On the voyage he captures a larger Spanish warship in a night attack, only to be forced to hand it over to the rebel leader, who claims it for himself. The Lydia later takes aboard Lady Barbara Wellesley, a British woman freed from a Spanish vessel, and Hornblower's feelings for her complicate his return home.

Raoul Walsh directed this 1951 British adventure, the sixteenth of the twenty-three films he directed, between Colorado Territory and Distant Drums. Gregory Peck plays Hornblower, with Virginia Mayo as Lady Barbara; Robert Beatty, Moultrie Kelsall, Terence Morgan and James Kenney appear in supporting roles, among a credited cast of fifty-two. Æneas MacKenzie, Ivan Goff and Ben Roberts wrote the screenplay, and Walsh produced with Gerry Mitchell.

On IMDb the film holds a critics' rating of 7.3 from nine reviews, while on TMDB it averages 7 out of 10 from 149 votes.
