A more accurate translation of the title is “God’s Agnes.”
Her character smoked non-stop in the script, but Jane Fonda had quit smoking ten years before starting work on this film. In the film, she is shown smoking cigarettes without tobacco, made from crushed reeds (which people switch to when trying to quit smoking).
Preparing for the filming, Ann Bancroft (1931-2005) spent a lot of time with the abbess of a women's monastery in Los Angeles, and together with actress Meg Tilly attended evening services at a women's monastery in Quebec.
The film's authors were notably influenced by the work of Dutch painter Jan Vermeer (1632-1675).
In preparing for her role, Jane Fonda consulted with psychiatrists and observed their work with patients.
