Agnes of God

Agnes of God is a drama and mystery film set in a convent near Montreal. A newborn baby is found dead in the room of a young novice, Sister Agnes, who claims to remember nothing about the pregnancy or the birth. A court-appointed psychiatrist, Dr. Martha Livingston, is sent to the convent to assess whether Agnes is fit to stand trial for the infant's death. As she investigates, Livingston, who has left the Catholic Church, comes into conflict with the convent's strong-willed Mother Superior, Miriam Ruth, who insists on protecting Agnes and the life of the order. The question of what really happened in the convent drives the psychiatrist's search for the truth.

Released in September 1985, the film was directed by Norman Jewison, the twelfth of the nineteen features he made. It followed A Soldier's Story in 1984, and Moonstruck came next in 1987. John Pielmeier wrote the screenplay, adapting his own stage play, and Jewison produced alongside Patrick J. Palmer. Jane Fonda plays Dr. Livingston, with Meg Tilly as Sister Agnes and Anne Bancroft as Mother Miriam Ruth. The cast also includes Anne Pitoniak, Winston Rekert and Gratien Gélinas among thirty-nine credited performers.

The film holds a critics' score of 5.8 out of 10 on Rotten Tomatoes, somewhat below its audience rating of 6.3 out of 10 on TMDB, based on 145 votes. It runs 98 minutes and was produced by Columbia Pictures in the United States.
