Paul Kersey returns to New York City to visit an old friend, only to find him dying after a beating by a street gang. The police arrive at that moment and take Kersey in on suspicion of murder. Facing a cellmate who becomes a lasting enemy and a neighborhood held in fear by Manny Fraker's gang, Kersey is offered a way out: a police inspector who knows his reputation releases him in exchange for help in cleaning up the area. Kersey moves into his dead friend's apartment and takes the fight to the gang.
The film is the third entry in the Death Wish series and reunites Charles Bronson with director Michael Winner, who had directed the earlier instalments. It was the tenth of the thirteen features Winner directed, coming after Death Wish II and before Appointment with Death. Bronson leads a cast that includes Deborah Raffin, Ed Lauter, Martin Balsam, Gavan O'Herlihy and Kirk Taylor, with Don Jakoby writing and Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus producing for Cannon Group.
Released in November 1985, the film cost about 9 million dollars and took roughly 16 million worldwide. On TMDB it holds a 6.2 rating from just under 500 votes. A critics' rating of 3.4 from 19 reviews is far lower, showing a sharp split between professional response and the audience score.
