Cannery Row

Set in a California coastal town whose sardine canning industry has collapsed, Cannery Row follows a marine biologist known as Doc and a newly arrived young woman named Suzy. The empty fish factories have left the area populated by an assortment of drifters, small-time schemers and sex workers, and the film centers on the relationship that develops between Doc and Suzy as both look for a fresh start. It is based on John Steinbeck's novel.

David S. Ward directed and co-wrote the film with William Graham, with Michael Phillips producing. It was Ward's first feature as director, ahead of Major League, King Ralph, Major League II and Down Periscope. Nick Nolte plays Doc, Debra Winger plays Suzy DeSoto, and Audra Lindley, Frank McRae, M. Emmet Walsh and Tom Mahoney appear among the credited cast of 39, with 50 credited crew members.

Released on February 12, 1982, the film runs 120 minutes and was made for 11 million dollars, against a worldwide box office of about 5 million. On IMDb it holds 6.6 out of 10 from roughly 4,400 votes, and on TMDB 5.9 out of 10 from 49 votes. A critics' rating of 6.6 out of 10 from eight reviews places it close to the IMDb audience score and above the smaller TMDB sample.
