Short description
In the countryside of southern Italy during the summer of 1978, a small village slows to a standstill under intense heat. Adults stay indoors while a group of children roam the fields and lanes on their bicycles. Nine-year-old Michele, the film's central figure, is out exploring when he comes upon an abandoned farmhouse. Inside, he finds something hidden that he keeps from everyone around him. What he has stumbled onto is connected to a kidnapping, and he gradually realizes that the adults of his own community, including people close to him, are involved. His discovery forces him to see the world of grown-ups in a new and unsettling light.
Gabriele Salvatores directed this Italian-Spanish-British production, working from a screenplay by Niccolò Ammaniti and Francesca Marciano, adapted from Ammaniti's novel. The cast includes Giuseppe Cristiano as Michele, Dino Abbrescia, Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, Diego Abatantuono, Fabio Tetta and Riccardo Zinna. The film came after Teeth and Amnèsia in Salvatores's filmography and before Happy Family.
Released in 2003, the film drew strong notices, with a critics' rating of 7.8/10 from 100 reviews. Audiences were also positive but somewhat less enthusiastic: it holds 7.4/10 on IMDb from around 18,000 votes and 7.1/10 on TMDB from roughly 981 votes.
