Escape from Sobibor dramatizes the uprising at a Nazi death camp in occupied Poland during the Second World War. Prisoners who have been spared immediate death are put to work, and the arrival of a Soviet soldier, Alexander Pechersky, gives the camp's underground organization the leadership it needs to attempt a mass breakout. The organizers know that a successful escape will cost the lives of those left behind, and that reaching safety is far from certain.
The film was directed by Jack Gold, its fifth feature in the chronological run of his filmography listed here, following Who?, Aces High, Little Lord Fauntleroy and The Chain. Reginald Rose wrote the screenplay, and Dennis E. Doty produced. The cast is led by Alan Arkin as Leon Feldhendler, Rutger Hauer as Pechersky, Joanna Pacula, Hartmut Becker, Jack Shepherd and Emil Wolk, among 45 credited performers. It was a British and Yugoslav co-production from 1987.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 7.3 from around 11,000 votes, and on TMDB it rates 7.2 from 217 votes. Those figures indicate a well-regarded television production that has retained a steady reputation among viewers. At 169 minutes, it is a long treatment of a single, tightly focused historical episode.
