Set after World War I, this adventure drama follows a French Foreign Legion platoon led by Major Foster. The unit is deployed to French Morocco to provide security for an archaeological team, headed by François Marneau, as they search for an ancient tomb. The mission faces opposition from El Krim, a local leader attempting to unite various tribes to fight colonial rule and protect the site. Among the soldiers is Marco Segrain, a man who joined the Legion to avoid imprisonment. As the expedition progresses through the desert, tensions rise between the military forces and the native tribes, while a romantic rivalry develops between Foster and Segrain.
Directed by Dick Richards, this was his second feature film following Farewell, My Lovely. The production was a United Kingdom venture involving ITC Entertainment and Associated General Films, featuring a cast that includes Gene Hackman, Terence Hill, Catherine Deneuve, Max von Sydow, and Ian Holm. With a budget of 9 million USD, the film earned 1 million USD at the worldwide box office. Audience reception is mixed, as shown by a 6.3 rating on IMDb based on 4,500 votes and a 5.8 rating on TMDB from 92 votes.
