Adam's Rib

Adam and Amanda Bonner are a married couple of New York lawyers whose domestic harmony is upended when a case puts them on opposing sides in court. Doris Attinger has shot at her unfaithful husband and his lover; the inexperienced gun handling leaves the husband only wounded. Adam, an assistant district attorney, takes the prosecution, treating the accused woman's guilt as obvious. Amanda, a defence attorney known for championing women's rights, agrees to represent Doris and argues that her husband's repeated infidelity and the lenient standards applied to men are central to the case. The courtroom battle grows personal, and the couple's arguments continue at home, straining their marriage.

George Cukor directed the film, the eleventh of the seventeen features listed for him, arriving between Winged Victory and Born Yesterday. Ruth Gordon and Garson Kanin wrote the screenplay, and Lawrence Weingarten produced for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn play Adam and Amanda, with Judy Holliday as Doris Attinger, Tom Ewell as Warren Attinger, David Wayne as Kip Lurie and Jean Hagen as Beryl Caighn; seventy-one performers are credited in all.
