Zazie, a ten-year-old girl from the provinces, is sent to Paris for a weekend so her mother can spend time with her lover. Left in the care of her uncle Gabriel, she is determined to ride the Métro, but a transport strike closes it. Undeterred, she sets off through the city, encountering a string of eccentric characters along the way. The trip becomes a chaotic tour of a Paris brought to a standstill, and Gabriel finds that minding his niece is harder than he expected.
Louis Malle directed and co-wrote the film with Jean-Paul Rappeneau, adapting Raymond Queneau's novel. It was Malle's second feature, following Elevator to the Gallows in 1958 and preceding A Very Private Affair in 1962. Catherine Demongeot plays Zazie, with Philippe Noiret as Oncle Gabriel, Hubert Deschamps as Turandot, Carla Marlier as Albertine, Annie Fratellini as Mado and Vittorio Caprioli as Trouscaillon. The credited cast runs to 33 performers.
Blending comedy with fantasy, the film was released in France on 28 October 1960 and runs 93 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.9 from around 7,200 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.6 from roughly 190 votes. A critics' rating of 7.6 from 18 reviews places it somewhat above the audience scores.
