The Shaggy Dog

Teenager Wilby Daniels accidentally brings home an old ring from a museum, and when he reads the inscription on it, he turns into a sheepdog. The change comes and goes without warning, which is a problem for his father Wilson, a mailman who has spent years hating dogs. Only Wilby's younger brother Moochie knows the truth. The transformations also put Wilby in the middle of a group of plotters, and breaking the spell depends on an act of bravery.

The Shaggy Dog was directed by Charles Barton, who had earlier made Nevada, Bud Abbott and Lou Costello Meet Frankenstein, and Africa Screams. It was written by Bill Walsh and Lillie Hayward and produced by Walt Disney for Walt Disney Productions. Fred MacMurray plays Wilson, with Jean Hagen as Freeda, Tommy Kirk as Wilby, Annette Funicello as Allison, Tim Considine as Buzz and Kevin Corcoran as Moochie.

Made for about 1 million US dollars, the film returned roughly 18 million worldwide, a strong result for its budget. On IMDb it holds 6.4 out of 10 from around 6,100 votes, and on TMDB 6.3 out of 10 from about 100 votes. A critics' rating of 6 out of 10 from 19 reviews places it close to the audience scores.
