Short description
Slick lawyer Thomas Farrell has made a career of defending mobsters in trials. It's not until he meets a lovely showgirl at a mob party that he realizes that there's more to life than winning trials. Farrell tries to quit the racket, but mob boss Rico Angelo threatens to hurt the showgirl if Farrell leaves him.
What's left behind the scenes
- During production, the crew faced certain difficulties filming the dance numbers due to a musicians' strike. Choreographer Robert Sidney had to rehearse the routines in Mexico with stand-ins; in one instance, filming was done exclusively to a pre-recorded drum track, and in another, with actors posing as musicians. After the strike ended, André Previn wrote music for the film, but he was not credited in the titles.
- During filming, Robert Taylor (1911-1969) actually limped and was forced to walk with a cane because he had broken his left leg near a pool shortly before filming began.
- Before filming began, director Nicholas Ray (1911-1979) signed a contract in which he pledged, among other things, to abstain from alcohol and drugs until the end of the production period.
