American Ninja 3: Blood Hunt
Short description
Sean Davidson, a karate champion raised in the traditions of the ninja, travels to a Caribbean island for an international martial arts tournament. There he meets Curtis Jackson, and the two become partners when they discover that a terrorist known as the Cobra is running a secret operation on the island, including genetic experiments and a deadly virus with which Sean is infected. To survive and stop the Cobra's plans, Sean and Jackson must take on the terrorist and his army of ninjas.
The film is directed by Cedric Sundstrom, who made it as the first of two American Ninja entries he directed, ahead of American Ninja 4: The Annihilation in 1990. David Bradley plays Sean Davidson, with Steve James returning as Curtis Jackson, and Marjoe Gortner as the Cobra, alongside Michele B. Chan, Yehuda Efroni and Calvin Jung. Gary Conway wrote the screenplay, and Harry Alan Towers and John Stodel produced for Cannon Group and Breton Film Productions, in a Canadian, American and South African co-production.
Released in February 1989, the film runs 89 minutes and sits in the action, adventure and drama genres. Audiences have rated it low: on IMDb it holds 3.8 out of 10 from around 6,300 votes, and on TMDB it stands at 4.8 out of 10 from roughly 195 votes, a small turnout that reflects the limited following the later entries in the series attracted.
What's left behind the scenes
- Michael Dudikoff categorically refused the offer to star in this film for a number of reasons: he no longer wanted to appear in martial arts films and did not want to fly to South Africa again, where Sam Firstenberg filmed "American Ninja 2: The Confrontation" in 1987. The fact was that the actor himself was a staunch opponent of the country's government, which pursued the policy of apartheid. He agreed to star in the fourth film of the "American Ninja" franchise only because the filming was supposed to take place in Lesotho.
- The role in the sequels was offered to Kurt McKinney, but upon learning that the filming would take place in South Africa, he refused, as he did not want to leave his young wife for a long time (he had recently married). The role went to David Bradley.
