Love Under the Crucifix

Set in feudal Japan, this historical drama follows Ogin, the daughter of a tea master. Both Ogin and her father are Christians during a time when the Shogun bans the religion. Ogin falls in love with a Christian feudal prince, but their relationship is complicated by his marriage and his commitment to his faith. As the persecution of Christians intensifies under the rule of Hideyoshi Toyotomi, the couple struggles to navigate their feelings and their beliefs.

The film was directed by Kinuyo Tanaka and is the third in a chronological list of her directorial works, following Forever a Woman and The Wandering Princess. It features a cast that includes Ineko Arima in the role of Gin Sama, Tatsuya Nakadai as Ukon Takayama, and Ganjirō Nakamura II as Sen Rikyu. Other cast members include Mieko Takamine, Osamu Takizawa, and Kōji Nanbara. The screenplay was written by Masashige Narusawa.
