Short description

Niko is a young reindeer who longs to fly and meet his father, a member of Santa Claus's flying team. Despite facing ridicule from others and struggling with a fear of heights, he seeks flying lessons from a squirrel named Julius. Accompanied by their friend Wilma, Niko travels toward the North Pole to find his father. Along the way, the group must contend with a pack of wolves and work to protect Santa Claus and his reindeer from danger.

The film was co-directed by Michael Hegner and Kari Juusonen. It is the third film in Hegner's directorial sequence, following Help! I'm a Fish and The Ugly Duckling and Me!. For Juusonen, it is the first in a series that later included Niko 2: Little Brother, Big Trouble and Niko: Beyond the Northern Lights. The voice cast features Olli Jantunen, Hannu-Pekka Björkman, and Vuokko Hovatta.

Produced with a budget of 6 million USD, the movie earned 22 million USD at the worldwide box office. Audience reception is mixed, with a rating of 6.1/10 on IMDb based on 4,300 votes and a rating of 5.8/10 on TMDB from 160 votes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • "Niko: Path to the Stars" became the most expensive animated film in the history of Finnish cinema. Furthermore, it became the best-selling Finnish film. The rights to it were sold in more than a hundred countries worldwide.
  • Initially, the producer and screenwriter of the animated film, Hannu Tuomainen, planned to base the plot on Finnish folklore. During the work process, this was abandoned, and instead, the central theme became the protagonist's coming-of-age.
  • The animation in the film was originally designed with an English-language soundtrack in mind. Temporary voice acting was done by Irish actors during production, after which the film was dubbed into many languages around the world.
  • There were at least five different versions of the cartoon's script.
  • In early script versions, the main character was named Rusty and Pietu.
  • The voice acting for the squirrel Julius was the first such work for the famous Finnish actor Hannu-Pekka Björkman.
  • A shortened version of the cartoon, approximately 45 minutes long, was made for broadcast on American television.
