Short description

Antoine Doinel is in his mid-thirties, working as a proofreader and seeing a record-shop employee named Sabine while his marriage to Christine ends in divorce. When his autobiographical novel comes to the attention of Colette Tazzi, a former girlfriend who is now a lawyer, the two meet again by chance, and encounters with figures from his past follow. Love on the Run is the fifth and concluding chapter of the series of films about Doinel, all of them starring Jean-Pierre Léaud, and it draws on earlier episodes in the character's life.

François Truffaut directed, produced and co-wrote the screenplay with Marie-France Pisier and Jean Aurel. The film is the twelfth of the fourteen features he directed, coming after The Story of Adèle H. and before The Last Metro. Marie-France Pisier plays Colette and Claude Jade plays Christine, with Dani and Dorothée also in the cast, alongside Daniel Mesguich, among a credited cast of twenty-three.

Released in France in January 1979 and running ninety-three minutes, the film is a comedy, drama and romance in roughly equal measure. It holds a rating of 7 out of 10 on IMDb from around 8,100 votes, and 7 out of 10 on TMDB from far fewer, about 219. A critics' rating of 6.5 out of 10 from thirteen reviews places professional assessments slightly below the general audience response.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film uses footage from "American Night" as a flashback, which actually has no relation to the story of Antoine Doinel.
  • The vase into which Antoine throws the crumpled paper could previously be seen in another film by François Truffaut, "American Night".
