Ed Lover and Doctor Dré play versions of themselves as two barbers with little talent for cutting hair. Looking for a change, they join the New York police force, where their sergeant, Cooper, makes their lives difficult. The pair stumble onto a serious case and set about solving it in their own unorthodox way.
The film was directed by Ted Demme, the first feature in a run that continued with The Ref, Beautiful Girls, Life and Blow. Seth Greenland wrote the screenplay, and the cast includes Denis Leary as Sgt. Cooper, Badja Djola, Cheryl "Salt" James and Jim Moody, with 85 credited performers in all. It was made for about 4 million dollars and took roughly 11 million worldwide.
Audience response has been mixed. On IMDb it holds 5.4 out of 10 from around 9,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 5.5 from a much smaller base of 40. A critics' rating of 5.3 from nine reviews places it close to those audience figures.
