Mr. Destiny

Larry Burrows is a thirty-five-year-old office worker who feels his life has gone wrong. He blames much of it on a single moment from his childhood: a missed shot during a baseball game that he believes steered everything that followed. After a difficult birthday, a broken-down car leaves him killing time in a bar, where he pours out his frustrations to the bartender, Mike. What follows gives Larry the chance to live the version of his life he always imagined, complete with wealth, status and a different marriage, though this alternate existence brings its own difficulties, and he comes to want back what he left behind.

James Orr directed and co-wrote the film with Jim Cruickshank; the two also produced it alongside Susan B. Landau. It was the first of the three features Orr directed, arriving five years before Man of the House and seventeen before Christmas in Wonderland. Jim Belushi plays Larry, Linda Hamilton plays his wife Ellen, and Michael Caine appears as the bartender Mike, with Jon Lovitz, Hart Bochner and Bill McCutcheon among the credited cast of thirty-two. The production cost about 20 million US dollars and took roughly 15 million worldwide, so it did not recover its budget at the box office. On IMDb it holds 6.5 out of 10 from around 14,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.3 from 236 votes, while the critics' rating stands lower at 4.3 from 17 reviews.
