In the Yukon Territory during the early 1930s, a lone trapper named Albert Johnson buys a sled dog that has been badly hurt in a fight. The man who previously owned the animal accuses Johnson of stealing it and brings others to his remote cabin. The encounter turns violent, and a member of the group is killed. Sergeant Edgar Millen of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, who is not convinced Johnson is guilty, must then lead a pursuit through the mountains, joined by local men drawn to the cold and the reward money. The chase becomes long and costly for those taking part.
Peter R. Hunt directed the film, which followed Rough Cut in his filmography and was written by Michael Grais and Mark Victor. Charles Bronson plays Johnson and Lee Marvin plays Millen, reuniting the two actors years after they had appeared together. Andrew Stevens, Carl Weathers, Ed Lauter and Scott Hylands are among the credited cast of 24. Shot in wintry mountain country, the film is based on the real case of a fugitive sometimes remembered as the Mad Trapper.
Made for about 10 million dollars, Death Hunt took in roughly half that amount worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.9 from 8,134 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.7 from 214 votes, suggesting a modest but durable following. A critics' rating of 6.1 from six reviews places it below both audience scores.
